Slow Food Springfield presents:
PrairiErth Farm Tour and Lunch at Palms Grill Café in Atlanta, IL (60 minute drive North of Springfield)
Sunday, August 7th
Aim to arrive at farm at 10:15am, tour begins at 10:30am, lunch at 12 noon, (suggested time of departure from Springfield, 9:10)
Join for a tour of the incredible 300 acre organic farm, PrairiErth Farm, which is at the forefront of the local food movement focusing on growing diverse crops, building healthy soil and strong relationships with the community. The Bishop family has been farming their land for more than 30 years, which consists of the father, David Bishop, who serves as the backbone of the farm operation with his expertise. David’s two sons Graham, Hans and daughter-in-law, Katie, work together to maintain the farm. Hans and Katie were representatives of USA at the 2012 Slow Food International Terra Madre. Terra Madre is a worldwide gathering of farmers and food producers celebrating and sharing in the crusade to preserve heritage foods. Terra Madre is biennial event that takes place in Salone del Gusto, Italy, the home of the Slow Food founding father, Carlo Petrini.
David Bishop, will guide us around the farm to explore and learn about their variety of cows, heritage breed pigs, chickens for eggs, vegetables, garden plants, fruits and grains.
Following the farm tour, we will caravan just five minutes down the road to the classic diner, Palm Grill Café, which will host a buffet-style meal featuring several vegetables from PrairiErth Farm, including a green salad, glazed carrots and a summer squash zucchini vegetable medley. In addition, there will be fried chicken, mashed potatoes and homemade pie.
Please be sure to bring appropriate footwear for farm terrain (no flip flops, please). It is the middle of summer, so be sure to prepare for the sunshine and heat by wearing sunscreen, bring a water bottle and perhaps a hat or sunglasses. You may also want to bring a notebook to document what you learn throughout the tour.
